　You can tell a lot about a wine from its color. Hold your glass at 45 degrees against a white background.

Look at the wine from above. The depth of color will give a good indication of the wine's physical contents e.g. a deep, nearly opaque, red-purple wine will almost certainly have a lot of tannins and other natural components.
